Are we in danger of isolating the next generation of employees in the UK?

Thirty per cent of 16 to 18 year olds expect to wait over a year to secure a job after leaving full time education, according to research published by Young Enterprise, a charity which empowers the next generation of UK employees to harness their personal and business skills.

In the study that was commissioned to examine the challenges facing young people in the jobs market, Young Enterprise found that 50% of respondents believed that increased international competition was a contributing factor to their difficulty in securing a job, while 46% still blame the ongoing impact of the recession, saying that there are fewer opportunities available.

The report also pointed to systematic problems with preparing young people for the world of work:

  • 47% of respondents thought that a good degree alone would not be enough to secure a professional job.
  • 58% said they would struggle to get the right sort of experience to secure the work they desired
  • 31% felt they were not taught essential workplace skills such as teamwork, confidence and problem solving
  • 33% said were not given enough careers guidance from their educational institutions

The UK’s youth unemployment figure stands at around 13%, which lags behind other European economies such as Germany (7%) and Denmark (9%). So what can be done to support the work of charities and other organisations like Young Enterprise to ensure that all young people have the opportunity to develop the skills they need to join the UK workforce?
