What Does A Successful Fundraiser Look Like in 2017?

In the Flow Caritas office, we are constantly discussing how the fundraising landscape is changing, but we’ve noticed that nobody seems to be having conversations about how fundraising people are changing. What changes must fundraisers make to themselves and the way that they work in order to succeed over the next twelve months?

Digital savvy

Any successful fundraiser needs to understand the many complex ways people communicate online, and what they expect from organisations who have an online presence. They know that digital communication channels are not a one way messaging system, but instead digital can be used as a source of collaboration where they can invite people to contribute to their charity’s work; whether it be through campaigning, donating, or volunteering.

Not only can they communicate effectively online, but they also advocate for digital transformation across the organisation. They have mapped out donor journeys on the website, they’re familiar with donation platforms such as JustGiving or Virgin Money Giving, they are excited to explore new sources of crowdfunding, and their content is optimised for mobile.

Social media presence

If you go to a fundraising networking event and don’t tweet about it, did it even happen? While every fundraiser can benefit from having an optimised LinkedIn profile, there is a great community of fundraisers on Twitter who share ideas and crowd-source opinions, as well as tweeting updates from both big and small events such as #IFC2016, #CharityMeetup, #NFPtweetup and our very own #womeninfundraising event.

If you’re a fundraiser who wants to stay up to date on hot topics in fundraising, an active Twitter account is essential.

Diverse income streams

While the changes to the fundraising sections of the Charities Act will affect the way everybody fundraises, the income stream that has been most affected is individual giving. This means that the charities whom rely on individual giving as their major source of income will have to find ways to diversify their fundraising. Fundraisers will need to start preparing for a shift to legacy giving, major donors and gifts, corporate partnerships, trusts and grants.
