Red Cross searches for young humanitarian achievers
06.08.2008

The British Red Cross have begun accepting nominations for their annual Humanitarian Citizens' Awards.

The awards scheme was established to recognise the work of people under the age of 25 years in improving the lives of others.

Finalists are selected by a group of young people who, in effect, also set their own definitions for what is and is not a humanitarian act. Any young humanitarian, including young fundraisers, may be nominated for an award.

'Every year we hear amazing stories from young people across the country and this year is proving to be no different,' said Red Cross' Schools and Education Department spokesperson Frankie Hitie. 'We know there are still young people out there who deserve to be recognised and have their stories told.'

In 2007, the award finalists ranged from a group of teenage volunteers who set up a support group for young carers to a young man with learning difficulties who used first aid to treat his father after he took a fall down the stairs.

Nominations for entry close on September 26.
