How To...........recruit new staff
31.10.2008

Taken from a published article in this months Professional Fundraising Magazine and written by our very own Paul Nott.....

1) Make your charity an employer people aspire to work for. If your staff enjoy working there ask your PR team to get them in the press and let the world know.

2) Communicate staff impact. Ensure your prospective (and existing) staff know exactly how their 9 to 5 will contribute to making a difference to your beneficiaries.

3) Sing your own praises. Work out what your unique selling points are and ensure they are mentioned in adverts and interviews i.e. the cause, working conditions, social life, career prospects and benefits.

4) Plan dates. Put dates in the diaries of all involved at the start of the recruitment process. Many good candidates are lost due to the gap between closing date and shortlist being too long or the timeline unclear.

5) Work with outsiders. Use recruiters wisely for urgent and hard-to-fill roles and those that will have a large financial impact if left vacant. Meet them early on in the process and use their knowledge of the market.

The easiest way to avoid having to recruit new staff is by retaining your existing staff. Ensure your staff feel valued and that you have an effective retention strategy in place.
