Interviewers, are you asking these questions? Interviewees, are you prepared for these questions? The consultants at Flow Caritas believe that these are the most revealing interview questions you can ask to get the most out of your candidates (for better or worse).
1) Who was your best boss and why?
This is one of the most important interview questions to ask because it says a lot about how a candidate likes to work. An honest answer will tell you; what kind of management style they respond best to & if that is compatible with your organisation. If you are looking for a person who can do a decent amount of work without supervision but the candidate ideally wants a manager that holds their hand then they aren’t going to be the one for you!
2) Why did you leave/are you leaving your previous role?
This question will always give you a good idea of what a person wants from a new role, whether it be money, more responsibility or a fresh start. People aren’t always forthcoming with these motives from the get-go because they think it will reflect badly on them. By asking this question you are subtly encouraging them to open up.
3) What can you do for us that other candidates can’t?
Give your candidates a chance to really sell themselves. What’s their USP? This question gives candidates the time to highlight their experience and characteristics that will benefit you and your organisation. If you’re applying for a job, you definitely need to walk in to your interview with an answer to this question!
4) What would you change in your current job and why?
There aren’t many interview questions that will cut to the core of your candidate’s skillset, but this is one of them. It will give you a good insight into a candidate’s skills that won’t jump out from their CV because they aren’t being given the opportunity to utilise them. For instance, if the candidate is looking for a step up from an entry level position then they will probably have a decent amount to say about their potential. It will also help you understand what someone is looking for in a new job.
5) What is it about [insert organisation name] that makes you want to join us?
This question will allow you to quickly gauge a candidate’s commitment to the role. It is a really efficient way to separate the wheat from the chaff, to help you find someone who is not only qualified but is also committed to the role. Asking questions like this will help you to recruit staff that won’t up and leave you as soon as they think they can find something better.
